SRINAGAR: Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium is gearing up to host a landmark sporting event, as it welcomes the final leg of the Legends League Cricket (LLC) tournament. Running from October 9, to October 16, the tournament promises to captivate cricket fans with seven thrilling matches featuring some of the biggest names in international cricket.

Spectators can expect to see global icons such as Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, and Ian Bell in action. This event marks the return of international-level cricket to Kashmir for the first time in nearly four decades, sparking immense excitement across the region.

Given the significance of the event, security preparations are being meticulously managed. Senior officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, alongside other security agencies, have devised a comprehensive plan to ensure the safety of players, officials, and spectators.

A significant number of security personnel will be deployed in and around Bakshi Stadium, with multiple checkpoints and surveillance systems in place. Enhanced CCTV coverage will be closely monitored by top officials to prevent any incidents. “We have left no stone unturned to guarantee maximum security. Multi-tiered checkpoints, continuous surveillance, and robust patrolling will be key elements of our strategy,” a senior police official stated.

Crowd management will also be prioritised, with barricades and designated entry points ensuring a smooth flow of spectators. Strict frisking will be carried out to maintain order inside the stadium, with local authorities encouraging families to enjoy the tournament in a safe environment.

The tournament’s grand finale on October 16, is set to be a historic moment for Kashmir, showcasing the region’s ability to host world-class sporting events. The administration, led by the Lt Governor, expressed immense pride, noting that the LLC tournament not only highlights Kashmir’s beauty but also its growing cultural and sporting significance.

“This is a proud moment for Kashmir. Hosting the Legends League Cricket is a testament to the region’s potential and its ability to host global events,” a senior official remarked.

The matches, scheduled as follows, are drawing widespread attention:

October 9: Urbanrisers Hyderabad vs Southern Superstars
October 10: India Capitals vs Manipal Tigers
October 11: Konark Suryas vs Gujarat Giants
October 12: Qualifier (Position 1 vs Position 2)
October 13: Eliminator (Position 3 vs Position 4)
October 16: Grand Finale

Chosen over Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium due to its larger seating capacity of 30,000, Bakshi Stadium has undergone significant renovations. Traditionally a football ground, the stadium has been specially prepared for cricket, with pitch curators from the United States ensuring optimal playing conditions.

The LLC tournament, which began in Jodhpur and moved through Surat, will culminate in Srinagar, with six teams—India Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Konark Suryas, Manipal Tigers, Southern Super Stars, and Urbanrisers Hyderabad—battling for the championship title.

Local cricket enthusiasts see the tournament as more than just entertainment. “This event is an inspiration for young players and shows that Kashmir is ready for international-level sports,” said Asim Shabir, a local cricketer. Feroz Ahmed, a lifelong cricket fan, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Watching cricket legends in Srinagar is a dream come true. This will be a spectacle we’ll remember for years.”

The event is also expected to boost tourism, with visitors from across the country flocking to Srinagar, further showcasing the peaceful and beautiful side of the region. Sajad, a tour operator, noted, “This is more than just cricket. It’s an opportunity to highlight the potential of Kashmir as a host for international events and promote tourism.”

As the countdown begins, excitement is palpable, and cricket fans across Kashmir eagerly await what promises to be a momentous week of sporting action.
