The two countries have provided significant military aid to Ukraine, including offering their F-16 fighter jets. However, Kyiv has long requested more land fire power, including air defense systems, artillery shells and armored vehicles.

Last year, the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany said they would work on getting 100 refurbished Leopard tanks to Ukraine. The German government says it has sent 18 as part of its share.

“Ukraine urgently needs more military support, given the heavy fighting on the battlefield,” said Brekelmans. “These tanks can play an important role for the Ukrainian army to defend itself against Russian troops.”
