Ghanaian-Australian singer Genesis Owusu announced his second album struggler, August 18 via Ourness/AWAL. He offered a preview of the record, which includes lead single and opener “Leaving the Light,” complete with a dramatic accompanying music video.
Follow-up to Owusu’s 2021 album toothless smile Recorded by a small team of producers in the US and Australia, inspired in part by the tragicomedy of Samuel Beckett waiting for godot and Franz Kafka’s Magical Realism Novella abnormalBilled as “a looming exploration of life’s chaos and absurdity,” it has an inspiring undertone of stamina and perseverance.
“Striver travels through an absurd world without a ‘where’ or a ‘why,'” Owusu explained in a statement. “Just an instinctive inner rhythm, yelling at them to survive the plague and lightning that fell from the sky. The cockroaches just keep croaking.”
With hectic hip-hop and hard-hitting punk rock, “Leaving the Light” is an impassioned rock track led by a sparkling bassline that feels tailor-made for head-banging. Owusu sings lyrically about coming out: “The obstacles don’t stand in my way, I see the test/They can try to knock me down, boy, I’m a vermin,” he spat, perhaps nodding abnormal‘ Part of the insect protagonist.
