New York Yankees starting pitcher Louis Gil was sidelined in the fourth inning of Tuesday's game against the visiting Cleveland Defenders with lower back tightness.

Gill called the coaches after throwing a changeup to Cleveland slugger Jose Ramirez, and Steven Kwan stole second. After a brief meeting with head coach Aaron Boone and a coach, Gill was fired and replaced by Tim Hill.

Gill pitched on seven days' rest, allowing three runs and three hits in three-plus innings. The rookie pitched six times and struck out three, but only six of 20 batters, including Ramirez, reached base on the first pitch.

Gill entered Tuesday's game with a 12-6 record and a 3.39 ERA in 24 starts. Gill also struggled with command at times, missing most of his first two seasons due to Tommy John surgery and walking 66 batters in 124 2/3 innings.
