Typhoon Bebinka made landfall in Shanghai as a Category 1 storm on Monday morning, the most powerful tropical cyclone to directly hit China's financial center in more than seven decades.
Bebinka, which had peak winds of 151 km/h (94 mph) near its eye, made landfall in the city of nearly 25 million people around 7:30 a.m. (2330 GMT), state media reported The city was the strongest storm to hit Shanghai since Typhoon Loria in 1949.
Shanghai is rarely directly hit by strong typhoons, which usually make landfall in southern China. Last week, a destructive Category 4 storm Yagi swept through southern Hainan Province.
Hundreds of flights have been canceled at the city's two airports since Sunday night, and Shanghai Railway Station has suspended some rail services. The disruptions come as China celebrates the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival public holiday.
Shanghai resorts such as Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Amusement Park, and Shanghai Wildlife Park have been temporarily closed, and many ferries have also been suspended.
