The New England Patriots’ recent loss to the New York Jets exposed some glaring issues.

Quarterback Jacoby Brissett struggled significantly, managing only 98 passing yards.

The offense failed to capitalize on key opportunities, unable to score a single touchdown.

Brissett’s lackluster performance has ignited discussions about his future as New England’s starting quarterback.

Fans and analysts are increasingly vocal about giving rookie Drake Maye a chance, citing his potential and impressive preseason showing.

However, former NFL quarterback Alex Smith cautions against rushing Maye into action, arguing against throwing a young player into a challenging situation unprepared.

“Jacoby Brissett is a great guy to learn from. He is a good quarterback, he can process, he can play. It’s not a great situation. We talked about the lack of talent on the outside. … Let him go out there and manage this. Let the young kid learn,” Smith said, via SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Smith highlighted the risks of exposure for Maye, including potential injury, development of bad habits and loss of confidence. The No. 3 overall pick from the 2024 NFL Draft made his debut with one mop-up drive in the fourth quarter against the Jets.

He praised the Patriots’ approach of giving Maye limited game time without high expectations, providing valuable experience without undue pressure.

The one-time mentor for Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs also addressed Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo.

“The best for not only your team but certainly Drake Maye’s future is to not play right now. … The best plan for the Patriots is to play Jacoby Brissett and let Drake Maye continue to learn,” Smith said.

By allowing Maye time to grow and learn from Brissett’s experience, the Patriots can ensure their rookie quarterback is fully prepared when his time comes to lead the team.
