Red Sox arms stifle Blue Jays bats in Boston victory

Wilyer Abreu had an RBI double and had two hits, and the visiting Boston Red Sox walked 10 to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 on Monday night. Team (Toronto Blue Jays).

Boston right-hander Tanner Houck (9-10) pitched five scoreless innings in the opener of the three-game series, allowing one hit and one walk.

The Red Sox (79-78) have won three in a row and the Blue Jays (73-84) have lost four in a row. Boston leads the season series 7-4.

Toronto right-hander Chris Bassett (10-14) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and seven walks in 4 1/3 innings while striking out two.

Boston scored an unearned run in the second inning. Abreu led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Connor Wong reached first base on an error by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He reached third on Nick Sogard's fielder's choice grounder and scored on Vaughn Grissom's sacrifice fly to left.

The Red Sox added one run in the third. Triston Casas and Tyler O'Neill drew two outs with walks, and Abreu had an RBI double to right.

In the fourth game, the team led 3-0. Sogard doubled to third and scored on Ceddanne Rafaela's grounder to Bassitt.

Zach Pop replaced Bassitt in the fifth inning after Casas drew a walk and reached third on Abreu's single. Wong reached base before the end of the inning on Sogard's double grounder.

The Blue Jays got their first baserunner when Addison Barger walked with two outs in the fifth inning. Ernie Clement followed with a single to left and then Jonatan Clase flew to left.

Greg Weissert replaced Houck and pitched two singles with a double in the sixth inning.

Boston scored once in the eighth inning against Dillon Tate, and Wong, who walked and stole second, scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Rafaela.

Chris Martin, Boston's fifth pitcher of the day, allowed a single to Nathan Lukes in the ninth inning, and then Lukes scored on Spencer Horwitz's one-out single.

Boston placed right-hander Kenley Jansen (shoulder) on the injured list on Monday and recalled right-hander Chase Shugart from Triple-A Worcester.
