OpenAI CTO Mira Murati announces she’s leaving the company

Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, said Wednesday that she is leaving the company after six and a half years.

“After careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI,” she wrote in a memo to OpenAI, also published on X, adding, “It is never a good idea to leave a place one holds dear. An ideal time, but now this moment feels right.

Mulati is the latest in a growing number of senior executives to leave the high-value startup. OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and former security chief Jan Leike announced their departures in May. Co-founder John Schulman said last month he was leaving to join rival Anthropic.

Mulati also wrote that she is “leaving because I want to create time and space to pursue my own exploration. My primary focus at this time is to do everything I can to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the momentum we have built.”
