SRINAGAR: As assembly election fervour sweeps Jammu & Kashmir, the proscribed Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) on Thursday said that if the Government of India (GoI) had lifted the ban on their activities, they would have contested up to 50 seats in the ongoing elections. The organisation reiterated its commitment to resolving the “Kashmir issue” through peaceful dialogue.

Shamim Ahmed, a panel advisor for JeI, said there is a need for inclusive discussions among all stakeholders. “Every conflict can find a resolution through dialogue,” he said, adding that their participation in the elections aims not only to advance Jamaat’s interests but also to enhance the well-being of the people of Kashmir.

During a meeting in a Baramulla village in north Kashmir, JeI leaders reflected on their long history of participating in democratic processes, including the acknowledgement of free and fair Parliamentary elections, while still facing restrictions. “Had the GoI lifted the ban on our activities, we would have been able to contest for 50 seats in the upcoming elections,’” they lamented.

The Jamaat leadership criticised the government for failing to uphold fundamental human rights, citing past examples.

The organisation also expressed frustration over frequent raids on their homes, saying that no incriminating evidence was found.

“Jamaat has never acted against India or its constitution, yet our homes have been raided without any incriminating evidence being found. This is a war against us,” they declared, adding that those in power often prioritise basic amenities like roads and electricity over broader and more pressing issues.

The Jamaat leaders called for addressing the fundamental needs of the region, claiming that resources from Jammu & Kashmir are being exploited for the benefit of neighbouring states, particularly in terms of power supply. They reaffirmed their commitment to democracy and urged the public and political voices to speak out against the hardships imposed by the ban.

While congratulating the Election Commission of India (ECI) for conducting free and fair Parliamentary elections, they questioned why the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami remains in place.(KNO)
