Imagine Shaquille O’Neal playing alongside Dirk Nowitzki on the Dallas Mavericks.

Apparently, fans were close to seeing that dream become a reality, but it just couldn’t happen.

On the latest episode of “The Big Podcast”, O’Neal chatted with Nowitzki and mentioned how he frequently tried to get signed by the Dallas Mavericks.

In fact, he added that when he was set to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, he spoke with Mark Cuban about coming to Dallas.

Unfortunately, the Lakers wouldn’t make a deal happen so O’Neal moved onto the Miami Heat.

The idea of O’Neal and Nowitzki on the same team is an incredible one that could have radically changed the state of the league.

At that time, both players were immensely successful and dominant.

If they were on the same squad, the Mavericks would have immediately been the fiercest team in their conference.

That’s why it’s not surprising the Lakers shot down any mention of O’Neal heading to Dallas.

If they were going to lose their iconic big man, they definitely weren’t going to let him walk to a Western Conference rival.

Ironically, O’Neal headed to the team that would defeat the Mavericks in the Finals a few years later.

The Heat took down the Mavericks in the 2006 Finals and O’Neal scored an average of 13.7 points and 10.2 rebounds during that series.

It’s somewhat surprising that the Mavericks never acquired O’Neal, especially as his career started to wind down.

Instead, fans will always wonder what would have happened if he had moved there directly after playing in Los Angeles.

O’Neal and Nowitzki would have been a massive and powerful duo.
