Carson Kelly’s three-hit night guides Rangers past Angels

Carson Kelly completed a tripleheader for the Texas Rangers on Friday night as they beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 in Anaheim, Calif., to open the final series of the year between the two teams. .

Kelly had a single in the second inning, a home run in the fourth, a double in the sixth and then a grounder to start the ninth. The three-hit game was Kelly's fifth of the season and his first since Aug. 11.

Wyatt Langford and Adolis Garcia hit back-to-back home runs in Game 1 for the Rangers (76-84), who improved to 12-12 this month. Marcus Semien added an insurance run with a solo homer in the ninth inning and finished the game with three hits.

Eric Wagaman had an RBI single and Nico Kavadas drove in a two-run double for the Angels (63-97), who fell to 7-17 in September. The 97 losses set a single-season franchise record for Los Angeles.

Daniel Robert (1-0), the third of seven pitchers used by the Rangers, earned his first major league victory in a scoreless sixth inning. Kirby Yates pitched a no-hitter in the ninth inning and recorded his 32nd save.

Jacob deGrom, making his third start since returning from his second Tommy John surgery, struck out five in four innings, allowed one run on four hits and walked no bases. The two-time Cy Young Award winner finished the year with a 1.69 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings.

Reed Detmers (4-9) tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts, but gave up four runs on eight hits and four walks with one walk in five innings in the loss. It was Detmers' third double-digit strikeout game this year, as he also struck out 12 in a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on April 6.

Jake Lopez had a pair of doubles for the Angels, who retired in order just once and went just 2 for 16 with runners on base.
