The United States has seen signs that Iran is preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack on Israel “immediately,” a senior White House official told NBC News on Tuesday.

The official warned that any direct Iranian attack on Israel “will have serious consequences for Iran.”

Iran's suspected planned attack comes as Israeli ground forces invade southern Lebanon as part of an attack on the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Israel last week killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an explosion in Beirut, Lebanon.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 250 points as of 10 a.m. ET as the cost of WTI crude soared amid concerns about rising tensions in the oil-rich Middle East.
