Singapore court charges property billionaire Ong Beng Seng

SINGAPORE – Singapore on Friday filed two charges of obstruction of justice and abetting against property billionaire Ong Ming Seng. According to local media reportsin a case involving a former government minister.

Ong is a Malaysian businessman living in Singapore and the managing director of a listed hotel owner and operator in Singapore. Hotel Real Estate Co., Ltd..

In July, Singapore's anti-graft agency issued an arrest notice against Ong as part of an investigation involving former Transport Minister S Iswaran. Ong was asked to provide information about his interactions with Iswaran.

On Thursday, Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to receiving gifts worth more than $300,000 and perverting the course of justice.

HPL said at the time of his arrest that Ong “remains fit and proper to discharge his duties and responsibilities as managing director” but would continue to monitor the matter and “reevaluate the appropriateness of Mr Ong's continued appointment”.

HPL's shares were suspended ahead of a court hearing on Friday.
