The Cure Debut New Song “Another Happy Birthday” Live in Concert

Robert Smith has been working on new music for The Cure’s ongoing North American tour. In the first of three shows at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night, the band premiered a never-before-heard track called “Another Happy Birthday.”

Even by The Cure’s standards, “Another Happy Birthday” is a particularly depressing song. “And your birthday is the worst day/I’m singing to ghosts/Happy birthday/I forgot how it was,” Smith sings alongside the ornate but muted instruments.

The origins of “Another Happy Birthday” actually date back to 1997. At the time, Smith mentioned that the song’s existence was tied to B-sides and rare collections he was working on. “It’s unlike anything The Cure has done before. It’s not a verse-chorus-verse type of song, but it’s more fluid,” he said music video then.

It wasn’t clear if Smith’s version Tuesday night was of the same song, or an entirely different work of the same name. I don’t know if this song will appear in The Cure’s long-awaited new album, song of the lost worldSmith previously premiered several other new songs on the band’s current tour, including “Lonely,” “Nothing Lasts,” “Fragile Things” and “I’ll Never Say Goodbye.”

The North American leg of The Cure’s “Songs of a Lost World Tour” will run until early July. The ticket sales process of the tour is quite tormented, but there are also limited quantity can still pass conductor.
