Braves’ Austin Riley belts two 450-foot HRs

Austin Riley hits two tape-measure homers, Travis Dano scores two runs with a putt in the eighth to give Atlanta Braves an 8-5 victory over visiting Philadelphia The Phillies are in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.

With the bases loaded, d’Arnaud lined up in left field with reliever Gregory Soto (1-4) against Ozzie Albis and Marcel Ozuna and broke a 5-5 tie. Matt Olson followed with a long sacrifice flight.

Riley went 2 for 5 for his eighth and ninth homers of the season. The first blast traveled 459 feet and the second blast traveled 458 feet. It was his fifth multiple-homer hit — the first since June 15, 2022, in Washington.

Nick Anderson (3-0) won and Ressel Iglesias made a perfect nine on his fourth save. Atlanta starter Dylan Dodd allowed 4 runs and 3 strikeouts with 7 hits and 1 walk in five innings.

Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola went six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits (including three homers) and two walks. He hit seven. It was his first multiple home run of the season and tied his career high with three.

Mariners 3, Athletics 2

Ty France hit two home runs, Logan Gilbert pitched a strong eight innings, and Seattle completed a four-game sweep of visiting Oakland.

Eugenio Suarez walked home the tie with a loaded bottom and two outs in the eighth. Gilbert (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits. The right-hander didn’t hit the ball and slapped six batters. Paul Sewald went 1-2-3 with nine runs and two strikeouts to earn his 11th save of the season.

Seth Brown hit a two-run homer for the A’s, which lost their eighth straight.

Orioles 3, Yankees 1

Kyle Gibson allowed two singles and withstood four walks in seven scoreless innings as surging Baltimore beat host New York.

Anthony Santander hit an RBI single and Austin Hayes hit a two-run double as the Orioles won their three-game series, tying their three-game series this season and finishing in May’s 6-8 for the 11th time in 15 games after a three-game losing streak.

In a three-game losing streak from May 3-14, Gibson (6-3) earned his second start after allowing 12 runs in 17 2/3 innings. New York’s Clarke Schmidt (2-5) matched Gibson through the fifth inning and allowed one run on five hits in five innings. Schmidt struck out four and walked two.

Tigers 7, White Sox 2

Alex Fedor hit a career-high 10 hitters, scoring his second career win in Detroit’s road win over Chicago.

Faedo (1-2) gave up two runs and three hits without a walk in six innings. Javier Baez and Zack Short each scored two runs and Akil Baddoo hit a solo homer. Riley Green and Spencer Torkelson both hit four times, scored a run and scored a goal for Detroit.

White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (3-4) allowed 4 runs and 6 hits while tying a career high with 7 walks in 3 2/3 innings. Gavin Sheets hit a solo homer and Tim Anderson had another RBI for Chicago.

Padres 8, Nationals 6

Rougned Odor capped off a five-run run with a three-run homer and two outs in the ninth, and visiting San Diego beat Washington for a three-game series in the rubber.

Washington scored five runs in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, but Jack Cronanworth and Juan Soto singled Hunter Harvey (2-2) to start the ninth. Harvey rebounded, striking out Xander Bogaerts and Matt Carpenter, but Odor lined up a 1-0 fastball to the right for his second homer in as many days.

Drew Carlton pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Josh Hader made his 13th save in the ninth for San Diego, which has lost five straight series. Padres starter Blake Snell allowed just one run on four hits in five innings. Joey Meneses, Dominic Smith, Jeimer Candelario, Keibert Ruiz and Corey Dickerson each scored for Washington.

Rockies 7, Marlins 6

Ezequiel Tovar hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth as Colorado bounced back from breaking a four-game winning streak to beat Miami in Denver.

Tovar had two hits, Elias Diaz homered, Randal Grichuk had three and two hits, and Ryan McMahon also had two for the Rockies. Marlins reliever Huascar Brazoban (0-1) walked with a loaded first in the bottom of the ninth. Tovar singled out left with a five-man infield to bring home Kris Bryant.

Jorge Soler homered in his three hits and Garrett Cooper hit a home run for the Marlins. Jonathan Davis also had three hits, and Xavier Edwards and Yuli Gurriel had two each for Miami.

Rays 6, Blue Jays 3

Zach Eflin had a strong seven-inning run in the final of the four-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla., to lead Tampa Bay to a win over Toronto.

Eflin (7-1) allowed just one run on six hits for his third straight. He walked two and recorded no strikeouts. Randy Arozarena had two hits and two RBIs for Tampa Bay, which has won three games in the series and tied the record in its current 10 home games. Improve to 5-2.

Alejandro Kirk recorded three hits, Brandon Belt went 1-2 with an RBI and two walks, and Toronto is 1-2 in its last eight games Lost seven games. Toronto starter Alec Manoa (1-5) was eliminated early in the fourth quarter after allowing five runs on three hits in the third inning (four earned). He walked five innings and struck out six.

Cardinals 2, Reds 1

Gorman extended his hitting streak to 15 games with double figures in RBI. Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas (3-1) hit five to give the Reds their loss in seven innings. He strikes out three and no one goes. Giovanny Gallegos made his fifth save in the final four outs.

Redskins starting pitcher Luke Weaver went scoreless for 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six times, walked once and allowed three hits. Relief Lucas Sims (1-1) allowed two runs and took the loss. The Reds’ Spencer Steele singled and scored on a Stewart Fairchild double in the ninth, but Gallegos struck out Luke Meyer to end the game.

Mets 10, Cubs 1

Carlos Carrasco allowed runs in a season-high 6 2/3 innings, Pete Alonso hit his major league-leading 19th homer and Visit New York avoided a three-game sweep by beating Chicago.

Carrasco (1-2), who is making his second start after missing more than a month with elbow inflammation, has his best five-game start in 2023. The right-hander tossed Dansby Swanson’s first-inning solo home run and had four other hits and four strikeouts while walking two. New York’s Jeff McNeil had three hits and scored his third on Alonso’s two-run homer in the seventh.

Returning from a shoulder injury and appearing on the mound in the majors for the first time since July 5, Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks (0-1) had his moments of success Thursday, such as a Let the Mets retire in seven straight games. However, he was charged with five runs, three earned runs, six hits and two walks while allowing five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Giants 5, Brewers 0
