After struggling in the first five games, Sears is posting a 3.25 ERA in his last five games, covering 27 2/3 innings.

“I’ve been trying to keep my mechanic between outs,” Sears said. “Trying to find those little inches that help my fastball get better. The velo goes up a little bit when you feel like you can When you position it well, it’s all about letting the other pitches get behind it. I feel like I’ve done a good job of preparing every week and I’ll continue to do that.”

Sears has a 2.86 ERA in four home starts and a 5.97 ERA in six games away from the Oakland Coliseum.

Ahead of Monday’s game, the A’s made some roster tweaks, including designating first baseman Jesus Aguilar for the assignment. Aguilar hit . 221 with five home runs in 36 games.

Atlanta got a boost Monday with the return of starting pitcher Michael Soroka. The right-hander threw six four-run innings in his first start since Aug. 3, 2020, when he tore his right Achilles tendon.
