Reds down Dodgers in thrilling fashion once again

Will Benson hit his first career home run late in the ninth to give the Cincinnati Reds another 8-6 win over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night .

After TJ Hopkins took a step ahead in the tie, Benson sent a 2-2 chip from Evan Phillips’ 420-foot deep right-field stand. The long ball capped Benson’s 48th major league game in two seasons. Cincinnati led Los Angeles 9-8 in Tuesday’s series opener when they scored three runs late in the ninth.

Alexis Diaz (2-1) scored a perfect win in the ninth inning. Phillips (1-2) faced two hitters, but none retired, as the Dodgers lost their fourth straight game. Mookie Betts hit his 42nd career opening homer, his 16th long ball of the season, to open the game.

Rookie Elly De La Cruz thrilled the home crowd again with a tape-measure homer and a triple home run as the Reds won their three-game winning streak. The 458-foot blast is the fifth-longest by a major league hitter to hit a first home run in the Statcast era, dating back to 2015.

rays 2, twins 1

Randy Arozarena hit a homer late in the ninth to give Tampa Bay a win over Minnesota in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Arozarena caught on a 0-1 run by Twins reliever Jhoan Duran (1-2) and sent the ball over the fence in right field for his 12th home run of the season. Isaac Paredes also hit a home run for Tampa Bay, which won its fifth straight game and improved to 28-6 at home. Best record in the majors.

Minnesota allowed just three hits in the game, all singles. The Twins squandered a strong start by Pablo Lopez, who allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings. In his 92 games, he walked one and struck out six.

Cardinals 1, Rangers 0

Alec Burleson broke a scoreless game with a homer in the eighth inning that proved to be the only score St. Louis scored as it beat Texas in Arlington, Texas.

Burleson’s deep ball marred an excellent start for Rangers starter Jon Gray (6-2), who allowed one run with four hits and a season-high 12 strikeouts in nine innings.

St. Louis starter Jack Flaherty tossed six innings of home runs, three hits and five walks, with eight strikeouts. The visiting team’s bullpen was also delivered. Jordan Hicks (1-3) won, Giovanni Gallegos pitched a perfect eighth and Ryan Herlsley won his seventh with a 1-2-3 ninth save.

Athletics 9, Pirates 5

Ryan Nordah homered and visiting Oakland scored seven runs in the first inning to beat Pittsburgh in a three-game series rubber game.

Jess Peterson added a two-run double, Bruntruk had two RBIs and Jonah Bride and JJ Brady each had an RBI single for the A’s, who won back-to-back games for the third time this season. Oakland starter Hogan Harris (1-0), his first major league start, allowed three runs in five innings.

Rudolph Castro homered and hit a two-run double for the Buccaneers. Pittsburgh starter Roansy Contreras (3-5) has seven straight hits, six hits and two walks, with one strikeout.

Padres 10, Sailors 3

Juan Soto hit his first career five-hitter and scored four runs, Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer and San Diego’s victory over Seattle snapped a two-game series.

Soto went 5 for 5 with four singles and a double. Sanchez scored the Padres’ first run in the second inning, then extended the lead to 4-0 one inning later with his fourth homer in the last eight games. Padres right-hander Michael Wacha gave up two hits and a walk in six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to bring the score to 6-2.

Meanwhile, Seattle right-hander George Kirby (5-5) entered the game with a 3.04 ERA, allowing five runs with a career-high 11 hits in just 3 2/3 innings. He sent no walks and had 3 strikeouts.

Marlins 6, Royals 1

Jesus Sanchez hit a 445-foot homer to lead host Miami to their sixth straight victory over Kansas City with four runs.

Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez led the majors with a .403 batting average as he went 2 for 4. He has five straight multi-hit games. Edward Cabrera (5-4) won, though he left after five innings with a blister. He allowed one run.

Royals starter Jordan Lyles (0-10) allowed five runs and six hits in over seven innings.

Diamondbacks 6, Nationals 2

Corbin Carroll had four hits, including a two-run homer, and Zach Davies pitched in the seventh as Arizona beat host Washington.

Emmanuel Rivera added 3 hits and 2 RBIs for the Diamondbacks, who have won eight of their past 10 games. Ketel Marte had three hits and Carroll scored three runs. Davis (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked one.

Joey Menezes and Dominic Smith each had two hits for Washington, which has lost four straight. Patrick Corbin (4-6) went six innings while allowing three runs on 11 hits. He walked a pitch and struck out four.

Blue Jays 3, Astros 2

Chris Bassitt pitched a strong eight innings, pinch hitter Alejandro Kirk hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the seventh, and Toronto beat the visiting Houston team.

Bo Bichette and Brandon Belt hit solo home runs for the Blue Jays, who won two straight. Bassitt (7-4), coming off a back-to-back tough game, allowed two runs and four hits. The right-hander struck out five but walked no.

Jordan Alvarez hit a two-run homer for the Astros. Houston right-hander Ronald Blanco gave up two runs, three hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out five in just the second start of his career.

Guardians 5, Red Sox 2

Amed Rosario had three hits, scored twice and hit first base on his return to the starting lineup, Cleveland in a three-game series against visiting Boston equalizer.

Josh Naylor went 3 for 4 with RBIs and Josh Bell scored two for Cleveland, who beat the Red Sox 10-5 and bounced back from a 5-4 loss in the series opener. Tanner Bibee (2-1) allowed two runs (one free run) in five innings for the win.

Boston finished 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and they led with one out in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Rafael Devers. Kurt Crawford (1-3) gave up three runs (two runs) on five hits with three strikeouts in three or more innings.

Warriors 7, Mets 5

Michael Harris II hit a tie-breaking two-run homer straight into center field in the eighth to give Atlanta a win over visiting New York.

Harris, last year’s National League Rookie of the Year, came out of a slump going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three RBIs. The winning pitcher was Nick Anderson (4-0), who threw a scoreless eight. AJ Minter made his eighth save with a perfect nine.

Brooks Riley (1-1) had Marcel Ozuna double before Harris homered, and he was charged for the loss. The Mets’ lineup took a hit in the first inning when major league home run leader Pete Alonso had to leave the game after being hit in the left wrist by a Charlie Morton pitch. X-rays were negative.

Brewers 10, Orioles 2

Joey Wiemer went 4-for-4 with two homers and five runs, and Corbin Burnes went scoreless in eight innings as Milwaukee beat visiting Baltimore.

Willy Adames also homered for the Brewers. Burns (5-4) allowed just two hits and no walks while posting a season-high nine.

Orioles starter Dean Kramer (6-3) allowed nine hits and six runs in five innings. Baltimore ended the Brewers’ knockout run by two runs in the ninth.

Giants 5, Rockies 4

Austin Slater and LaMonte Wade Jr. each had two hits as San Francisco came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Colorado in Denver.

Tyler Rodgers (2-2) threw an inning of relief and Camilo Doval earned his 15th save for the Giants, who are on a 10-game winning streak against Colorado. San Francisco starter Logan Webb allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out.

Nolan Jones homered in two of his hits, and Ezequiel Tovar also had two for the Rockies. Colorado starter Conor Siebold allowed two runs on two hits, walked two and struck out four in six-plus innings.
