President Joe Biden held a union rally on Saturday, marking the first major event of his 2024 re-election campaign, emphasizing his economic agenda to boost the middle class.

Biden announced early support from the AFL-CIO, a federation of 60 unions around the world representing 12.5 million workers. “I’m proud to be the most pro-union president in American history,” he told a crowd in Philadelphia.

Biden touched on legislation enacted during his first term, such as pandemic relief, last year’s sweeping climate, health and tax packages and the recent bipartisan debt-ceiling agreement.

He also renewed his call for tax reform, which has been a challenge in his first term, even among some Democrats. He also repeated calls for a minimum tax on billionaires.

“It’s time for the super rich to start paying their fair share,” Biden said, but he reiterated his pledge that no one earning less than $400,000 will pay more in federal income taxes.
