The Washington Commanders won’t be making many headlines throughout the 2023 NFL season, with the consensus being that the team still has a lot more work to be done to be a true force to be reckoned with in the NFC.
Although the Commanders aren’t expected to make much noise next season, the team might be seeing some promising signs from second-year quarterback Sam Howell as he prepares to compete to be the team’s starter under center come Week 1.
Howell currently holds the top spot on the quarterback depth chart for Washington, but head coach Ron Rivera has made it clear there will be a competition for the job in training camp, and rightfully so.
However, Howell has been getting some early praise from new offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Eric Bieniemy, who claims the young quarterback can autocorrect himself via Ben Standig of The Athletic.
“His demeanor does not change, and he’s very, very competitive,” offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said during last month’s OTA period. “And I will say this: He autocorrects himself as well because he knows exactly what he did and what he should have done, which is a good thing.”
Even though the Commanders have been concerned about his issues with turnovers, Washington seems to remain confident in Howell’s ability to lead this team moving forward, which may ultimately give him the edge over veteran Jacoby Brissett in training camp.
Brissett is a career backup and seems to have come to terms with that fact after bouncing around the league and landing in Washington, but that won’t stop Rivera and company from making him the starter if they feel Howell isn’t ready to take on the burden of being QB1.
Only time will tell if Howell can correct those turnover issues and live up to expectations while being the right man under center for Washington.
