Netflix in Talks to License HBO Series from Warner Bros. Discovery

If the deal goes through, it would be the latest example of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav changing his digital content distribution strategy, as he has shown a willingness to forego exclusivity and licensed content to boost profits.

One of the HBO shows that will be included in the schedule is the Issa Rae comedy lack of security, which aired for five seasons from 2016 to 2021. The Netflix license will be non-exclusive, meaning any included HBO series will still be available on WBD’s streaming service, Max.

Earlier this year, Roku and Tubi snapped up 2,000 hours of the Warner Bros. Discovery series, including west world, Nevers, raised by wolves, f boys island, legend, find magic mike, head teacherand time traveler’s wife — many of which were cut from what was then known as HBO Max.

While HBO’s content has largely been quarantined during the streaming wars, the network has shown a willingness to license older shows in the past.More than a decade ago, HBO co-edited sex and the city to TBS, The Sopranos to A&E, and curb your enthusiasm to TV Guide Channels.

In 2014, Amazon Prime Video signed a series of exclusive deals such as The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empireand true bloodIt’s worth noting that Amazon wasn’t producing its own original content at the time.

The Netflix negotiations come nearly a year after Warner Bros. Discovery unceremoniously began dumping HBO Max titles to cut costs ahead of its merger with Discovery+.
