First Saliva-Based Pregnancy Tests: Everything To Know

Much different from the traditional urine collection used to detect pregnancy, an Israeli company has launched a saliva-based pregnancy test kit to enhance the home testing experience.

Israeli startup Saignostics is responsible for developing the kit — the Salistick — which will be sold in several European countries, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Israel. It is also currently undergoing the certification process to expand its reach.

Salistick is an innovative and user-friendly method that provides highly accurate results, especially in the early stages of pregnancy. It can be easily used anytime, anywhere, Abingdon, Salistick’s exclusive distributor in the UK, says on its website website.

Salistick detects pregnancy by identifying a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced in the body when someone becomes pregnant. It is said to be approximately 96.32% accurate on the first day after a missed period and 97.35% on the second day IFL Science.

The creators of the Salistick came up with the idea after years of studying saliva. They realized that saliva could be used to detect several changes going on in the body, be it pregnancy or COVID-19. The researchers hope to make it easier for people to test for these conditions by using saliva instead of other methods such as urine or blood, wired 2022 Report.

“For a variety of medical reasons, saliva is the key to rapid diagnosis. It is the only non-invasive, simple and hygienic way to detect hormones, viruses and even diseases,” Professor Aaron Palmon, co-founder of Saligostics, told Wired. “With Salistick, we leverage the powerful diagnostic capabilities we gain from analyzing saliva. This product completely eliminates the need for blood and urine samples when testing for pregnancy.”

Chris Yates, Chief Executive Officer of Abingdon Health plc, said: “This exciting innovation offers women the opportunity to test for a cleaner, more direct and simpler way to detect pregnancy, a long overdue development in the pregnancy testing market.” statement earlier this year.
