The San Antonio Spurs are about to become relevant again, as they have taken French phenom Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

It has been several years since the departures of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard, but it looks like happy days are about to return for the team.

Head coach Gregg Popovich, who is arguably the best in the business, is still around, and he delivered some good news for fans who are anxious to see the phenom play sooner than later.

Popovich said that Wembanyama will play in the upcoming summer league, per Tim MacMahon.

Wembanyama will give San Antonio the opportunity to establish a tradition of outstanding big men, which stretches back before the arrival of Duncan in 1997.

A decade before that, they drafted David Robinson with the No. 1 pick, and he put the Spurs on the map once he debuted in the 1989-90 season following a stint in the Navy.

Even prior to that, the Spurs had Artis Gilmore, an All-Star-caliber center who ended up in the Hall of Fame, during the early and mid-1980s.

Wembanyama couldn’t have possibly asked for a better situation to start what could be an incredible NBA career.

Many have described him as a generational talent, and a few have even said he is the greatest prospect in league history, even more so than LeBron James or Shaquille O’Neal.

The French standout is still a work in progress, but he appears to have all the tools needed to someday become arguably the best player in basketball.
