During his playing career in professional sports, Deion Sanders was a freak of nature, as he was one of the few that was able to play in and be an All-Star-caliber player in the MLB and NFL.

Sanders played professional baseball from 1989 to 2001 for four teams, including the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds (multiple stints), and San Francisco Giants.

Although he was a talented baseball player, Sanders loved football, and it showed, as he won two Super Bowl titles, NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and was named an All-Pro eight times.

That love for football has carried over to his post-playing career, with the superstar multi-sport athlete giving coaching a try and being successful enough to become the head coach of the University of Colorado.

Although his coaching career is on the rise, and he’s cemented his legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time, Sanders has dealt with health issues that threatened to lead to a foot amputation.

Fortunately, it appears Sanders has avoided the amputation but has to have surgery to address blood clots in his legs, with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith taking to Twitter to show his support.

It just goes to show that anyone can be dealt a bad hand when it comes to having health issues that can be severe enough that an amputation is an option or requirement.

Sanders was once considered arguably the best athlete in the world during his prime in the NFL, but he’d likely give it all back just to be healthy today and enjoy his career as a coach on the college level.
