Two people are dead and more than a dozen were injured after a chaotic scene of gunfire and fleeing vehicles broke out around midnight on Friday at a large party in Saginaw, Michigan, state police said Saturday.
Police said 15 people were injured by gunshots or because they were hit by vehicles. Everyone who was injured was taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Most of the victims were shot, some were hit by vehicles, said Lt. Kimberly Vetter. One person was shot and then hit by a car.
Among the injured, 19-year-old male and a 51-year-old female died after being shot, said Vetter.
No suspects have been arrested, and there’s no longer any threat to public safety, according to a police press release. The party was attended by more than 200 people, police estimate.
Saginaw is a town in central Michigan, about 30 miles north of Flint, near Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. It has a population of around 44,000.
Shooting started after fight broke out at large party, police say
Friday night’s street party attracted the attention of police earlier in the evening, before shooting broke out among attendees, according to a press release.
Police said at least five different guns were used during the shooting incident, and that people were also hurt while trying to run away when they were hit by fleeing vehicles.
Around midnight, authorities received 911 calls that people were shooting into the crowd.
The crowd of partygoers was a large one, and the event had been promoted on social media, police said. Earlier in the night, the group of people had been told by police to disperse in other parts of the city.
