The trade deadline is fast approaching.

Contending teams will be looking to add to their roster and make a run to October this year, while those out of contention will likely be making moves for 2024 and beyond.

The St. Louis Cardinals fall into the latter category after a dreadful first half which saw them post a 38-52 record.

That’s their worst first-half mark since going 36-50 in 1986.

St. Louis will be an interesting team to watch as they likely will sell pieces off, but may look to add some pieces simultaneously.

On Twitter, Katie Woo of The Athletic pointed out a key reminder for the trade deadline.

This is of course obvious.

In order for a team to get what they need at the deadline, they’ll need to part ways with some valuable talent.

However, in the case of the Cardinals, major moves haven’t been made at the deadline in quite some time.

St. Louis has settled for bargain pieces that are relatively cheaper than a top-level player.

Despite being out of contention, the Cardinals may look to add an ace with club control to help them in 2024.

Shane Bieber and Dylan Cease are potential options.

The Cards in recent years have been hesitant to part ways with certain prospects.

However, if they want to turn things around and get back in the picture in 2024, they’ll have to step out of their comfort zone and deal away some top talent to get what they need.

An ace is their biggest need, and this could be the deadline in which they finally attempt to add a big piece.
