Major European Airports Report Record Passenger Numbers in June 2023

The number of passengers arriving at several major airports in Europe has significantly increased during June this year. Airport data show a remarkable recovery marked at the start of the summer holiday season, recording the highest numbers of passengers since before COVID-19.

The most popular destinations in June for tourists to Europe include destinations like Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece and Turkey, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The passenger numbers reported have risen all over Europe. However, they differ from place to place, in some being more significant and in some less.

Brussels Airport Exceeds 2 Million Passengers for the Second Consecutive Month

This year, Brussels Airport, Belgium’s main air station, welcomed more than two million travellers in June, which is 17 per cent more than in June 2022. There were also 14 per cent more travellers on flights this June compared to 2022.

A notable growth in departing transfer passengers was noticed in June, with their share reaching 15 per cent. This means there were 33 per cent of such passengers compared to 2022, once again confirming the airport’s position as an important crossroad between Europe, North America, and Africa.

Frankfurt Airport Reaches Over 5.6 Million Passengers in June

With 5.6 million passengers served in June, Frankfurt Airport (FRA), which remains the busiest airport in Germany, has achieved a new historic record.

For the first time since the pandemic, the airport welcomed over 200,000 daily passengers contributing to an 11.3 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the numbers remained 15.6 per cent lower than the pre-pandemic numbers in June 2019.

Iceland’s Keflavík Airport Records a Significant Recovery

There was an impressive rise in passenger numbers at Keflavik Airport in Iceland as well, with 861,130 passengers recorded in June. There were around 55,000 Icelanders’ departures, and another 223,000 were international travellers, mostly following nationalities:

  • Americans (43.3 per cent)
  • Germans (7.6 per cent)
  • Polish (seven per cent)
  • British (4.4 per cent)
  • French (4.2 per cent)
  • Dutch (2.6 per cent)
  • Spanish (2.6 per cent)

June Became The Busiest Month for Copenhagen Airport Since 2020

The summer season was a busy start for Copenhagen Airport (CPH) in Denmark, which welcomed 2.5 million passengers in June, the biggest number since the pandemic’s start in 2020.

Spain has proven to be the top destination for tourists, followed closely by France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey.

Vienna & Munich Airports Experience High Growth of Passengers

16.6 million travellers received service at Germany’s Munich Airport until June 2023, a startling 28 per cent rise in passenger numbers compared to the previous year.

Whereas nearly three million travellers were recorded at Austria’s Vienna airport, 21.4 per cent locals and 8.9 per cent transfer passengers.

20% Increase in Passengers at Zurich Airport

In June 2023, the Zurich Airport in Switzerland welcomed 2.5 million passengers, an incredible 20 per cent increase over the previous year. On June 30, 2023, the airport recorded its biggest flow of passengers since the pandemic’s outbreak.
