as expected, kansas city chiefs Defensive tackle Chris Jones did not report to training camp Saturday, according to multiple reports

Jones’ contract impasse with the team could last the team’s two-week training camp or longer.

Jones is entering the final year of his contract as the defensive tackle market continues to soar. That includes the recently signed four-year, $96 million contract of New York Jets defensive tackle Quinen Williams.

Last season, Jones’ pass rush win percentage was 21 percent, the best in the NFL at his position.

Jones, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, signed a four-year, $80 million contract in July 2020. He’s scheduled to make a base salary of $19.5 million in 2023. The 28-year-old is eligible for a $500,000 practice bonus and a $1.25 million incentive bonus if he has 10 sacks this season.

Jones, who turned 29 earlier this month, finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season, tying his career-best 15.5 sacks. He had 65 sacks in 107 games (86 starts) over seven NFL seasons.

The Tennessee Titans’ Jeffrey Simmons signed a four-year, $94 million deal, just $1 million shy of the full four-year value of Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s existing contract. Defensive tackles Dearon Payne of the Washington Commanders (four years, $90 million) and New York Giants’ Dexter Lawrence (four years, $87.5 million) also make Jones among the highest-paid defensive tackles.
