Late on Thursday night, the Miami Marlins and New York Mets pulled off a trade.

The Marlins acquired veteran right-hander David Robertson from the Mets in exchange for two prospects.

In 40 appearances this season, the 38-year-old has posted a 2.05 ERA.

Robertson should provide a major boost at the back end of the Marlins bullpen, as he does have closing experience.

The Mets will be getting 18-year-old infielder Marco Vargas and 19-year-old catcher Ronald Hernandez in exchange for Robertson.

Both prospects are currently in the rookie league.

On Twitter, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic provided the news of Robertson being traded to South Beach.

The Marlins have been a surprise contender this season.

They own a record of 55-48 and are just a half-game back in the National League Wild Card race.

The Mets on the other hand, own a record of 48-54, sitting seven games back of the Wild Card spot.

By trading Robertson, the Mets have begun the process of selling at this year’s trade deadline, while the Marlins have begun to stack their ballclub and prepare for a postseason run.

Miami last reached the postseason in 2020, which was the COVID-shortened season.

Robertson is a former All-Star and was part of the New York Yankees’ 2009 World Series championship team, so he will bring some valuable experience to a young Miami team as they look to take the next step and make a run at a postseason berth.

The Marlins sit in third place in the National League East entering Friday’s slate of games.
