UNRWA Holds Agency-Wide Education Data Analysis And Utilization Workshop

AMMAN,

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) held the Education Data Analysis and Utilization workshop in Amman during the period from 25 to 26 July 2023. The workshop brought together senior staff at different levels representing all the Agency’s five fields of operation – the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, in addition to Headquarter staff based in Amman. The workshop aimed to build capacity on the utilization of education data for all staff at different levels from headquarters to school level.

During the workshop, the participants explored plans and opportunities to ensure effective monitoring of the UNRWA strategic plan (2023-2028) and the optimal use of data through the engagement of all staff involved in the data production chain. This approach aimed to improve evidence-based decision-making at various levels within the Agency.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the exchange of good practices and experiences among the participants, including how to overcome potential challenges related to data collection, analysis, and reporting on strategic indicators. The ultimate goal was to develop a forward-looking plan to address identified challenges and improve data quality in the coming scholastic year.

During the event, UNRWA Director of Education, Julia Dicum, expressed gratitude to the participants for their essential roles in producing education data. She emphasized the significance of data-based decision-making in education and its impact on supporting educational outcomes. “The production of high-quality education data relies on the level of ownership and dedication demonstrated by the staff involved in the process,” she said.

The implementation of the workshop is supported by the Basque Government.

Notes to Editors

  • This gap was identified in the review of Education Management Information System (EMIS) in 2022, as a critical step to enhance data quality, analysis, and utilization. This workshop is the first stage to inform the cascade training in each field of operation, for all staff in the field: education staff, area staff, school management and teachers.
  • Additionally, the workshop provided an opportunity for the participants to enhance their knowledge of issues that affect the quality of data in education, including the process for setting appropriate targets and the necessity to automate routine operations such as the class formation, in alignment with the digitalization needed to enhance digital experiences of all staff, building strong foundations for the digital transformation of the UNRWA education programme.

Background Information:

UNRWA is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The United Nations General Assembly established UNRWA in 1949 with a mandate to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to registered Palestine refugees in the Agency’s area of operations pending a just and lasting solution to their plight.

UNRWA operates in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, The Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Tens of thousands of Palestine refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods due to the 1948 conflict continue to be displaced and in need of support, nearly 75 years on.

UNRWA helps Palestine Refugees achieve their full potential in human development through quality services it provides in education, health care, relief and social services, protection, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance, and emergency assistance. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.
