The European Union countries have granted temporary protection to nearly 4.07 million Ukrainians as of June 30, 2023, who had left Ukraine due to the Russian invasion of the country that started on February 24, 2022.
Among EU member states, Germany received the largest share of refugees granted temporary protection from Ukraine, providing shelter to around 1,133,420 people, which accounted for 28 per cent of the total beneficiaries.
Poland took second place, hosting 977,740 people or 24 per cent of the total), while the Czech Republic hosted 349,140 people or nine per cent of the total, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
According to recent data provided by the European Office for Statistics, Eurostat, compared with May 2023 figures, the number of beneficiaries granted temporary protection from Ukraine within the EU witnessed an increase of 45,800 people or 1.1 per cent.
Such data also show that the increase was mainly observed in Germany, by 21,830 people or two per cent of the total, Czechia with a rise of 9,050 people (2.7 per cent), and Ireland, where the number rose by 3,100 people (3.7 per cent).
“The main EU countries hosting beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine were Germany (1 133 420 people; 28 per cent of the total), Poland (977 740; 24 per cent) and Czechia (349 140; nine per cent),” the statement issued by the Eurostat reads.
Eurostat data also revealed that when comparing the temporary protection beneficiaries per thousand people among the EU member states during this June, the highest rates were recorded in:
- Czechia (32.2)
- Poland (26.6)
- Estonia (25.8)
- Bulgaria (24.9)
- Lithuania (24.7)
On the other hand, the overall average for the EU stood at 9.1 temporary protection beneficiaries per thousand people. As the authority explains, by June 30 of this year, Ukrainian citizens represented over 98 per cent of the beneficiaries of temporary protection within the EU.
Adult women accounted for almost half of these beneficiaries, representing 46.6 per cent of the total. At the same time, children comprised slightly more than one-third, contributing to 34.4 per cent of the beneficiaries, while adult men constituted less than one-fifth, making up 19.0 per cent of the total beneficiary population.
Previously, the figures from Eurostat indicated that by March 31, 2023, a total of 3.9 million Ukrainians were beneficiaries of temporary protection status across EU countries.
