Once it became official that superstar quarterback Tom Brady was going to retire and not return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the franchise had the tall task of finding a replacement for arguably the greatest football player of all time.

Obviously, the Buccaneers were not going to find someone who could fill Brady’s shoes, but up to this point in the season, the team may have found the next best thing with veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield doing an admirable job this year.

Although there was a lot of skepticism about whether Mayfield could be even a decent quarterback in Tampa Bay after he was signed by the team, the former No. 1 overall pick has played well this season and may have found a new home in the NFL after bouncing around the league the last couple of years.

With the Buccaneers potentially winning the NFC South division crown and punching their ticket to the NFL playoffs, Mayfield could extend his time in Tampa Bay, with former Bucs star Gerald McCoy believing the 28-year-old has earned another contract, as he said on The Jim Rome Show.

“As far as Baker, yes, he’s earned the right to get a two or three-year deal moving forward,” McCoy said.

With the Buccaneers having some talented weapons and still clearly a playoff-caliber team, Mayfield has a chance to make some noise in Tampa Bay if the team is indeed postseason-bound this year.

As McCoy pointed out, the Bucs could take advantage of the Philadelphia Eagles struggling right now, which would be a huge playoff win for the team and Mayfield.
